Flooring Ideas For Dog Kennel

If you plan to create a kennel, the most appropriate thing is to prepare the construction with all the materials that will be necessary, aiming at the best for the establishment and its functionality.

The type of floor is essential in a kennel since it is where the dogs spend the day and meet their physiological needs. The daily traffic will be heavy and intense due to the number of dogs, so the floor must be practical and easy to clean.

Check out the characteristics that make a floor the best option:

  • Easy to clean: the most important feature related to cleaning will depend on the type of routine established in the kennel. Floors should fit into the practice and should be easy to clean.
  • Anti-slip: the floor must have an anti-slip feature because, with the cleaning done with water, dogs can slip and suffer an accident.
  • Durability: the durability of the material must be extended, as you will not be able to keep changing the floor often.
  • Type of material: the kind of material that will be chosen will depend on both the cleaning routine and the quality of life you will provide for the dogs.

What Can I Put On The Floor For My Kennel?

There are two types of floors, the permeable ones that are made with materials that allow the flow of liquids and the waterproof ones. The choice will mainly depend on the cleaning routine established in your kennel.

  • Grass floors: are permeable and look easy to maintain, but it is one of the most complex, as it has a high cost of application and a high cost of maintenance, as dogs will urinate and defecate on the spot.
  • Crushed gravel: floors with gravel are also absorbent, with a low cost of implantation and low maintenance cost. As gravel absorbs the heat, do not use it all over the place as it can burn dogs’ paws in the heat.
  • Synthetic grass: just like conventional grass, they are porous floors but are not as efficient. The cost is too high and the drainage must be well done so as not to accumulate excreta and leave a bad smell in the environment, maintenance is easy and is done through cleaning and drying, without the need to change the material.
  • Rubberized: high implementation cost but easy to maintain, making the kennel look more modern.
  • Cement: it is one of the most common floors in kennels, it has a high cost but does not require maintenance, but cleaning must be constant and daily, since it is a waterproof floor.
  • Burnt cement: it is similar to the common cement floor but is smoothed, making it less abrasive.

What Type Of Flooring Is Best For A Kennel?

In general, waterproof floors are better for implementation in kennels, as cleaning is more convenient. However, it will be up to each creator to choose, as only he will know the best for his enterprise, deciding according to the characteristics of the establishment and the types of floors.

Is Sand A Good Floor For A Kennel?

Sand is widely used because it has a low (almost zero) implementation cost and low maintenance cost. Still, it is not the most suitable, especially for commercial kennels, as it conveys an aspect of neglect for the animals’ environment and does not allow a proper cleaning, making the system inefficient.

How Do You Build A Kennel Floor?

From choosing the ideal flooring for your establishment, you should hire companies specialized in working with trained professionals to provide the best service. This way, you will get a perfect floor and start your venture on the right foot.

How To Sanitize The Kennel

The kennel is where the dog will spend most of its time. That is why the environment must be clean and organized. But more than just an unpleasant smell, an unclean kennel threatens the healthy animals there. For example, canine parvovirus type 2, parvo, is highly virulent and contagious. The disease is spread from dog to dog by direct contact with feces.

The use of cleaning and disinfecting chemicals is essential. Don’t stick to homemade solutions. Here are some characteristics of disinfectants and how to apply them:

  • Disinfectants MUST be used in the correct concentration.
  • Adequate dwell time is required.
  • Disinfectants should be applied to a clean, non-porous surface free of organic matter.
  • Disinfectants and detergents can cancel each other’s actions and should not be mixed unless stated explicitly by the manufacturer.
  • Incorrect use of kennel cleaning products is a significant risk that has caused damage and even death to animals on board.

Cleaning a kennel starts with removing the animal. NEVER leave a pet in the kennel during the cleaning process.

  • Place the dogs in a separate waiting area.
  • Remove food and water bowls, bedding, and toys.
  • Clean the bowls by soaking them in a diluted disinfectant solution.
  • Rinse and dry or go through the dishwasher.
  • Blankets and other soft bedding should be washed in a washing machine.
  • Remove all solid waste from the kennel and sweep the hair.
  • Wash the kennel with hot water.
  • Dilute disinfectants and cleaning agents according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Be careful, as improperly diluted products can corrode metal cages and injure animals. Apply the solution to all surfaces.
  • Starting at the top, scrub the entire kennel with a stiff-bristled brush. Don’t forget the ceiling or walls above the dog’s height, as the disease can be transmitted from any unsanitary section.
  • Pay attention to support boards, the fronts, the backs of doors, hinges, latches, and surfaces between the rails.
  • Let the solution stand as per the instructions.
  • Rinse all surfaces well with water. Dry as completely as possible using a rubber squeegee. Fans or other ventilation can also be used.
  • Replace clean food and water bowls, bedding, and toys.
  • The kennel is ready for the animal.
Caution And Considerations When Cleaning The Kennel
  • Do not use ammonia cleaners in the kennels, as the smell is similar to urine and can cause your dog to urinate in the kennel.
  • Make sure disinfectant solutions are thoroughly rinsed away, as they can damage kennel materials if any residue remains.
  • If there is residue on your dog’s paws, he can get sick when licked.
  • Be sure to disinfect all items in a kennel, as bacteria and mold can grow on dirty things.
  • Disinfect the kennel walls and floor, primarily if the kennels are used by multiple dogs, to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria that can cause illness.
