Newfoundland Dog Vs. Great Pyrenees

If you are considering adopting or buying a new puppy and have researched the breeds, you must have noticed that some are very similar and have been wondering what the difference is between them. Today, I’m going to tell you about two beautiful breeds that are often confused: The Great Pyrenees and Newfoundland.

First, it is interesting that you understand what a race is. Animal breeds are defined as a group of animals, of the same species, with similar phenotypic characteristics, that is, similar in appearance in terms of size and coat. In the case of dogs, these characteristics are established by the American Kennel Club, also known as AKC, the entity responsible for setting parameters that define each breed. It is also where dog breeders register their dogs and puppies, the so-called pedigree. The document that contains all the parameters of each breed is called the “breed standard.” But what parameters distinguish and classify a dog according to breed? Check it out below:

  • Size (height, weight)
  • Proportion
  • Substance
  • Head shape
  • Eyes: colors
  • Ears shape
  • Color
  • Coat

However, despite these specific classifications, dog breeds are divided into seven groups according to the “functionality” of the species, such as herding, companion, and sports dogs. These categories are used in exhibitions and competitions, so the different races are compared to the same “functions.”

Newfoundland Dog

For being a sweet breed with a good temperament, they earned the nickname “Newfs,” a term used to refer to the breed affectionately. Of Canadian origin, fishermen trusted it to carry out rescues in the water and carry fishing nets and baskets with the fish they had. This breed is considered a great companion for adults, and a great nanny, making it an excellent choice for families with children. Newfoundland dogs have a soft expression that reflects the breed’s characteristics: benevolence, intelligence, and dignity Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed. According to the standard established by the AKC, they are extra large dogs, reaching up to 150 pounds in adulthood. Be found in different colors such as black, brown, gray, and white & Black. This breed is famous in the USA for an individual named Seaman, who was part of a historic expedition of 8,000 miles across the American continent. Lord Byron erected a monument at Newstead Abbey in the United Kingdom for his loved Newf, Boatswain. Next to the memorial is the inscription: “Who possessed Beauty without Vanity/Strength without Insolence/Courage without Ferocity/And all the Virtues of Man without his vices.”

What Dog Is Similar To Newfoundland?

The great Pyrenees are an ancient breed. Records have been found of them as early as 1800 BC. Originating in the Pyrenees Mountains, the natural border between France and Spain, they were used to tend sheep herds, protecting them from predators and thieves. In the 17th century, the Great Pyrenees were adopted as the Royal Dog of France in the court of King Louis XIV, after they proved useful as guardians of the chateaux. The Pys dog conveys the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty combined with great overall size and majesty. He has a white or mainly white coat that may contain markings of badger, grey, or varying shades of tan.

What’s The Difference Between The Great Pyrenees And A Newfoundland Dog?

Both the Great Pyrenees and Newfoundland belong to the group of working dogs. They are breeds selected to perform specific jobs, such as rescue and protection. Both breeds are considered docile with trainability and do not need regular physical activity. It is unnecessary to perform significant physical activities to satisfy your dog. They will be very happy and satisfied if you take them for light walks. The life expectancy of the Great Pyrenees is 10-12 years, and that of Newfs is 9-10 years. The newfs are great options for those with other dogs and small children. At the same time, the Pys is better to have supervision when interacting with other animals or children. Still, everything will depend on the individual and how he is introduced to the new family. As a guard dog, Pyrs are much more likely to bark to alert their owners of any sign of threat, an attitude that is hardly visible in Newfs dogs.

Which Is The Bigger Great Pyrenees Or Newfoundland?

These two breeds have extra large sizes, also known as molasses. However, one is taller, and the other is heavier. Newfs have an average height for adult dogs is 28 inches, and for adult bitches, 26 inches. The approximate weight of adult dogs ranges from 130 to 150 pounds, and adult bitches from 100 to 120 pounds. The dog’s appearance is more massive throughout than the bitch’s. Large size is desirable, but never at the expense of balance, structure, and correct gait. The Newfoundland is slightly longer than tall when measured from the shoulder to the point of buttocks and from withers to the ground. He is a dog of considerable substance, determined by the spring of rib, strong muscle, and heavy bone.

Pyrs’ height at the withers ranges from 27 inches to 32 inches for males and 25 inches to 29 inches for bitches. A 27-inch dog weighs about 100 pounds, and a 25-inch bitch weighs about 85 pounds. Weight is in proportion to the overall size and structure.

Is There A Difference Between The Pyrenees And Great Pyrenees?

Despite what many think, these two terms are meant to refer to the same race! However, the name “Pyrenees mountain dog” is more used in Europe, and the name Great Pyrenees is more common in the US.

With this information, you will be able to choose what fits best in your family. Good luck!
